Under government plans, annual subsidies for those could top £3 billion, paid out of all our fuel bill. 1pm Friday 3 June, outside Colombian Embassy, London With the recent ever-increasing gold prices, and the 'investor friendly' climate in Colombia in recent years fueled by the Colombian government’s 'democratic security' policies, multinationals have been awarded mining rights to extensive areas of the country. Many of these areas cover national parks, and lands inhabited by Indigenous, Afro-Colombian and peasant communities, who will be displaced to make way for the mining companies. Not only are the environmental consequences for what is currently one of the richest countries in the world in terms of biodiversity devastating; vulnerable communities will lose their livelihoods and food security. Film screening: 'Gold Fever in Cajamarca'
Following the Colombian government’s green light for AngloGold Ashanti’s La Colosa mining project in Cajamarca, Tolima Colombia Solidarity Campaign have launched a DVD, to raise awareness about the potential consequences of the mine which - unless stopped - will become the largest opencast gold mine in South America, using cyanide to process the gold ore.
