Rio Tinto targeted for Colombia investment

A protest was held outside Rio Tinto’s Melbourne offices on 13 March to launch a campaign against multinationals investing in Colombia. Rio Tinto has several exploration projects in Colombia and it plans to start mining next year.

Sintracarb?n Miners Win Two-Year Renewal Contract at Colombia?s Biggest Coal Deposit

ICEM affiliate Sintracarbón in Colombia last week achieved major wage and other gains, including 180 promotions for contract workers. The two-year contract, ratified 78-6 by the union’s Delegates Assembly on 18 January, is with Carbones del Cerrejón, the thermal coal exporter owned by AngloAmerica, BHP Billiton, and Xstrata. As reported in December by the ICEM, miners were seeking social improvements regarding family health, education, transportation, restrictions on outsourcing, and other social responses inside several Colombian communities in la Guijara state.

La firma de un acuerdo entre Carbones del Cerrejon y la Junta de Reubicacion de Tabaco es histórico y verdaderamente bienvenido. De acuerdo a Armando Perez, asesor legal de la Junta, el acuerdo contiene la mayor parte de lo que la comunidad ha venido demandando desde el brutal desalojo de los habitantes de Tabaco y la demolición de su aldea cometidos entre finales de 2001 y comienzos de 2002.

Reflection on the December 2008 agreement between Cerrejon Coal and the Tabaco Relocation Committee

The signing of an agreement between Cerrejon Coal and the Tabaco Relocation Committee is historic and truly welcome. According to Armando Perez, the Committee's legal adviser, the agreement contains most of what the community has been demanding since the brutal eviction of the inhabitants of Tabaco and the demolition of their village in late 2001 and early 2002.
